Frank at Dutch Goes the Photo provides a challenge every Tuesday. They always see my thinking hat going on.
This week the challenge is Colorful, as explained by Frank:
A radical departure from the past couple of weeks, which may be what you expect at this point, as we’ll be looking for images that are by their very nature: Colorful! What I hope you’ll do, is to jam as much color into your images, as you can get, with an eye toward having colors that work together. This is a great opportunity to be on the lookout for color in your daily lives; you may be surprised by the amount of color that is everywhere!
I could have gone with flowers of all kinds, especially those seen at the annual Carnival of Flowers in my hometown of Toowoomba; or the amazing sunsets for which Bribie Island is known. Maybe even the sights around Brisbane where colours often times dress up drab buildings.
However, I went with a few photos from the annual Vivid Festival in Sydney. It’s a 2 week period of sights, sounds and colours, with buildings and bridges lit by laser shows, often time accompanied by music. It’s an interactive experience with many of the sights encouraging the visitors to become involved. It’s an awesome event for photographers, and in 2014 I was lucky to have the opportunity to fly down and get a few shots. They’re not my best, but they do give an idea of what it’s like. I’m hopeful of a return in 2017.

How do they manage to get these colours on the buildings you wonder? Here’s a photo from the official advertising for the year I went, showing what has to be constructed to be able to be successful. In addition to showing that, it’s a fab photo. Click on it for a full size view.
Kim, these are amazing. When I was in Australia, I spent a decent amount of time in Sydney, esp near the Opera House. Having it all lit up like that must have been breathtaking. And to think of what it took to do. Wow. Love this! You are awesome. Blessings.

Absolutely unreal. Gorgeous photos Kim and perfect for the theme. Now on another note entirely…I think I need to live in Toowoomba just so I can say that word as often as humanly possible. 🙂

Hehehehe…you made me laugh Nikki. Toowoomba…I wonder how you actually are saying it. It’s an indigenous word loosely meaning “swamp”.

I was saying it like this…is this correct? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDKO7TFBb3g

Perfect! I once had a visit from a British friend and he had a lot of trouble pronouncing it…and even worse, the name of a beachside town north of Brisbane, called Mooloolaba. That’s a ripper. 🙂

Apparently this is quite the issue! I watched a couple of youtube videos with someone telling all of us Americans how to say the names of several places in your neck of the woods!
Now i have to go look up Mooloolaba and see if I’m saying that correctly! 😉

The Vivid festival is amazing. It seems to just get better and better. I visited a couple of years back but pictures of this year were mind-blowing. Just a pity the weather wasn’t especially good. I love the photos Kim. A great expression of the task.

Friends attended this year but I missed out. I’m blown away by how much Vivid has improved. Other cities have similar festivals now too.

You have to be on the look out for airline deals. I set up alerts and have been able to get some good ones.

It’s quite overwhelming when you make your first visit. But in time you take it all in. It’s an amazing experience.

Thanks Steve. Yes, it’s an amazing event; this year’s event just finished also had a display at Taronga Park Zoo, which overlooks the Sydney Harbour Bridge and surrounds.

Yes, the Opera House was amazing. The laser show on it alone lasts about 90 seconds with many different colour combinations.
